Why one day does not work

A whale trip is not an afternoon. The shortest of the six runs seven to nine hours from Tromsø harbour; three of them are twelve-hour days with about four hours on a bus in each direction. Either way it eats all of the light there is, and in polar night there is not much — roughly 09:00 to 14:00, as set out on polar night.

Then there is the gamble. Weather cancels departures. Whales are not where anyone expects them. A second-chance re-booking, where an operator offers one, is a free seat on another departure rather than a refund, and it is worth exactly nothing to somebody flying out the next morning — that distinction is on sightings and guarantees.

What each length of stay gets you

Insider tip

Do not book a twelve-hour Skjervøy day on your arrival day or your departure day. The bus boards from 04:45, comes back long after dark, and any delay on a winter mountain road is a delay you cannot do anything about with a flight to catch.

Building the days sensibly

Put the whale tour early in the trip, so a blank or cancelled day leaves room to go again.
Keep the day after a twelve-hour trip soft. You will not want a 09:00 anything.
Do not stack a whale day and an aurora chase on the same night — the reasoning is on northern lights and whales.

Does a longer stay cost more?

Obviously, in beds and meals. What it does not do is make the whale tour itself any more likely to work — nobody controls the herring. What it buys is a second roll of the dice and the ability to use a re-booking if you are offered one. In my experience that is the difference between people who leave satisfied and people who leave feeling cheated by weather, and weather cannot cheat anybody.

Which month those days should be in
